Discovering time with the sun

Time can not only be read on a clock, but also experienced outside. Homemade sundials invite you and your children to playfully discover how the sun moves and makes the course of the day visible.

A sunny afternoon in the garden, on the balcony or in the playground quickly turns into a little voyage of discovery. With simple materials such as a cardboard plate, a tube and bright colors, a craft project is created that arouses curiosity and imparts knowledge along the way. Children experience that time is a living thing and that it shows itself in the shadow of the sun.

Creativity and fun are at the forefront of the joint craft project. The cardboard plate is painted, decorated and decorated with numbers or symbols, as the mood takes them. The tube rises up in the middle and casts its shadow on the self-designed surface. Each child creates a personal sundial that is as unique as their own everyday life.

As soon as the sundial is set up outside, the observation begins. Together you can see how the shadow changes over the course of the day. In the morning it points in a different direction than at midday or in the late afternoon. These quiet moments invite you to pause and stimulate conversation. Children ask questions, develop assumptions and understand step by step how the sun and time are connected.

How to make a simple sundial:

Take a cardboard plate and poke a small hole in the middle.

Insert the tube vertically through the hole so that it is stable.

Decorate the plate as you wish with paint, pens or stickers and allow everything to dry thoroughly.

Place the sundial in a sunny spot.

Mark the position of the shadow on the plate on the hour and write down the corresponding time.

Repeat this step over several hours.

This will gradually create a functioning sundial that makes the course of the day visible.

A homemade sundial is also a wonderful way to create rituals. Perhaps you take a quick look at where the shadow is before having a snack or take a last look at it before dinner. This creates a connection between nature, the daily rhythm and family life. At the same time, an understanding of the environment and the passage of time grows. Homemade sundials combine crafting fun, learning and spending time together in the fresh air. They show that it doesn't take much to get children interested in natural phenomena and turn a simple afternoon into a little adventure.

Have fun trying them out!
