Intimacy in old age - physical changes and their influence on sexuality

Intimacy plays an important role for many people, even as they get older. The desire to communicate with their partner and be close to them does not diminish. However, there are physical changes that in many cases have an impact on sexuality and therefore also influence intimacy. However, those affected are not powerless in the face of many of these changes, but can actively counteract them.

Changes in body and psyche

  • It is a natural process for testosterone levels in men to fall over time. The important sex hormone was previously responsible for ensuring that both desire and erections were strong. However, if the testosterone level drops, this can sometimes lead to problems, making the man concerned feel less masculine and unable to live out his sexuality. Prescription medication helps to keep love life active in such situations.
  • A woman who has gone through the menopause also often notices this through its influence on her sexuality. On the one hand, desire often diminishes in the female sex, and on the other, the hormonal change is noticeable through vaginal dryness. This not only leads to itching, burning and inflammation in the genital area, but is also painful during sexual intercourse. Special creams alleviate the symptoms.
  • From the age of 60 , the likelihood of developing diabetes mellitus increases significantly. Deposits in the blood vessels lead to impaired blood flow and nerve conduction in the penis - erectile function is impaired. Overweight and obesity as well as a lack of exercise lead to more and more people developing diabetes. Exercising and eating a varied diet are therefore important prerequisites for staying healthy.
  • The older people get, the more likely they are to have had pelvic surgery. With these operations, there is always a risk of damaging important nerves or blood vessels that supply the genitals. This can result in both sensory and erectile dysfunction.
  • Childbirth and connective tissue weakness after the menopause often lead to urinary incontinence in women. Regular pelvic floor training can prevent this.
  • However, men are also often affected by incontinence due to diabetes mellitus or operations as they get older and are unable to hold their urine. The psychological factor plays a particularly important role and means that intimacy is no longer permitted in the usual form. Talking to your partner or an expert can help you to understand and be more relaxed.
  • The effects of chronic pain should not be underestimated. Osteoarthritis of the knee or pelvic joint often occurs with increasing age and limits the ability to move without pain. A new joint is often the solution for severe signs of wear and tear, until then moderate exercise and possibly painkillers help to alleviate the symptoms.
