The latest top ten list of the world's most dangerous roads was published by the motoring magazine V-Zine. The data in this article refers to this. The ranking is based on the number of fatalities on the respective road. According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT), 1.3 million people die in road accidents every year and between 20 and 50 million are injured.
So here is the ranking of the 10 most dangerous roads in the world, measured by the number of fatalities.
Yungas Road, Bolivia
The Andean road between La Paz and Coroico has topped this sad list for years. It is 70 km long, and there has been an alternative route since 2006, but 200 to 300 people still lose their lives on the Yungas Road every year. This is mainly due to blind hairpin bends, landslides, sudden changes in the weather and generally risky driving.
BR116, Brazil
This road connects Porto Alegre and Rio and is 1550 km long. The middle section between Curitiba and Sao Paulo is even called "Rodovia da Morte" due to steep cliffs, poor road conditions and unstable weather.
Road between Sichuan and Tibet
The most dangerous road in China runs through sparsely populated areas. However, landslides and avalanches endanger safety along its almost 2500 km length - the route leads over several 4000 and 5000 meter high mountains.
Pan American Highway, Costa Rica
This is the most dangerous road in Central America, especially the section between San Isidro de El General and Cartago. Locals call it Cerro de la Muerte (Hill of Death) because it leads through mountainous regions.
North-south connection, Croatia
A very dangerous route in Europe is the one along the Croatian Adriatic coast. It is not only the sometimes blind bends without markings and crash barriers that pose a danger, but also the speedy driving style of the locals.
Road to Cotopaxi National Park, Ecuador
The road to Cotopaxi National Park is very scenic but also very dangerous. A section of 40 kilometers between the park and the Pan American Highway. A little rain is enough to make the river crossing - without a bridge - life-threatening.
Connecting road from Luxor to Hurghada, Egypt
This road leads through a bandit area, so it is advisable to drive only in convoy. Drivers often switch off their headlights at night, which makes the situation even worse.
A44, England/Wales
The 40 km section of the A44 between Oxford in England and Aberystwyth in Wales is regarded as Europe's deadly stretch of road.
Road between Patiopoulo and Perdikaki, Greece
This mountain route is notorious and is also considered a deadly stretch due to its traffic density and poor condition.
Great Trunk Road, India
The 2500 km long road, one of the oldest traffic routes in South Asia, connects the eastern and western regions of the subcontinent. As on many of India's roads, traffic density is high and driving behavior is undisciplined.
In terms of road safety, Sweden and Switzerland are considered the absolute frontrunners.
