How to make these velvety soft drinks yourself.

They can be found on supermarket shelves in tempting bright colors: smoothies, the fruity drinks with many different flavors.

They originated in American juice bars, where they have been prepared since the 1920s. Their name is derived from "smooth" and means "velvety, soft".

Smoothies are made from whole fruit without the skin and seeds. This fruit pulp is mixed with fruit juices to obtain a creamy consistency. They contain many vitamins such as vitamin C, A, B and E, but important nutrients and fiber are lost during processing as the peel is not processed. In addition, the fruit is heated during production, which destroys some of the vitamins and nutrients it contains. This does not make smoothies unhealthy, they are just not as healthy as the manufacturers claim.

Make sure you enjoy smoothies that are made from whole fruit and do not contain any additives or added sugar . Count one bottle as one portion and cover the rest of your daily requirement with fresh vegetables, salad and fruit.

How to recognize a "healthy" smoothie

  • The pureed vegetable or fruit content must be more than 50%.
  • The added vegetable or fruit juice should therefore be less than 50%.
  • The puree or juice should be made from fresh fruit or vegetables.
  • Additives such as sugar, colorings, preservatives or flavorings are not necessary in a good smoothie.
  • No enrichment with "extra vitamins" or pectin. A good smoothie contains enough of these itself.
  • Added oils make it easier for the body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins.

Mix your own smoothies

All you need is a kitchen blender, fresh fruit or vegetables, fruit or vegetable juices or milk and yogurt. You can use this to prepare any smoothie to suit your taste.

Raspberry and melon smoothie

Wash and pick 200g of raspberries. Cut 100g of honeydew melon into small pieces. Puree the fruit with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Pour the smoothie into a nice cocktail glass - your fruity drink is ready.

Tomato smoothie

Puree 4 peeled tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1dl tomato juice, 1 dash of Tabasco and ½ tsp rapeseed or olive oil. Depending on your preference, you can pour it through a fine sieve to remove any remaining seeds. You can get an extra fresh taste by adding a little ginger. Pour the smoothie into a nice glass and serve with an ice cube.
